Catalytic transformation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a versatile bio-platform compound derived from cellulose or cellulose-derived carbohydrates, can manufacture diverse valuable fine chemicals. As shown in Scheme 1, the oxidation of HMF yields a series of important furfan-based compounds including 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), and 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). In particular, FDCA has been listed within the top-12 value-added chemicals from biomass by the US Department of Energy. Due to the highly analogue structure and property, FDCA can be used as a renewable bio-monomer to substitute the petroleum-derived terephthalic acid (TPA). The latter one serves currently as a monomer in polymer industry for manufacturing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. Alternatively, polyethylene furanoate (PEF) polymer obtained from the poly-esterification of FDCA with ethylene glycol has been in practical use as a renewable bio-based plastic. Therefore, the oxidation of HMF to FDCA is regarded as one of the most attractive biorefinery processes that could significantly reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to environmental protection.Catalysis Today., 2019, 65(3), pp.920-944.ACS Cent.Sci., 2019, 113(26), pp.288-240.
The development and integration of Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) into molecular electronic devices continue to be an exciting challenge. In such potential devices, heat generation due to the electric current is a critical issue that has to be considered upon device fabrication. To read out accurately the temperature at the submicrometer spatial range, new multifunctional SMMs need to be developed. Herein, we present the first self-calibrated molecular thermometer with SMM properties, which provides an elegant avenue to address these issues. The employment of 2,2′-bipyrimidine and 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetonate ligands results in a dinuclear compound [Dy2(bpm)(tfaa)6], which exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization along with remarkable photoluminescent properties. This combination allows the gaining of fundamental insight in the electronic properties of the compound and investigation of optomagnetic cross-effects (Zeeman effect). Importantly, spectral variations stemming from two distinct thermal-dependent mechanisms taking place at the molecular level are used to perform luminescence thermometry over the 5−398 K temperature range. Overall, these properties make the proposed system a unique molecular luminescent thermometer bearing SMM properties, which preserves its temperature self-monitoring capability even under applied magnetic fields.ACS Cent.Sci., 2019, 113(26), pp.288-240.Sci.Adv., 2019, 5, pp.5490-5499.

Benzothiazinone is any sulfoxide derived from a benzothiazine, that is a bicyclic heterocycle consisting of a benzene ring fused to that of thiazine. The compound BTZ043, a commercially available benzothiazinone, is a potent antibiotic against M. tuberculosis (MIC = 1-4 ng/mL), C. glutamicu(MIC=20 μg/mL), and M. smegmatis (MIC= 0.1-80ng/mL). BTZ043 has been suggested to lead to cell death in C. glutamicum ATCC 13032 by preventing decaprenyl phosphate recycling by sequestering the lipid in the form of decaprenyl phosphoryl ribose.J.Am.Chem.Soc., 2019, 141(23), pp.9262-9272.Chemosphere., 2019, 217, pp.724-731.
Ibuprofen is one of the pharmaceuticals which has been extensively used. Ibuprofen is slightly soluble in water (0.021 mg/ml at 20 C), but soluble in most organic solvents. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, mostly used for treating pain, fever, and inflammation, including painful menstrual periods, migraines, and rheumatoid arthritis. As other pharmaceuticals, Ibuprofen can leach into ground water and soil through direct and indirect use in daily life. Since conventional wastewater treatment plants commonly do not include pharmaceutical degradation, removal of pharmaceuticals is important.Chemosphere., 2019, 217, pp.724-731.Hepatology., 2019, 69(3), pp.1242-1258

A novel solar-wastewater-energy recovery system was presented to simultaneously remove refractory organic pollutants from saline wastewater and produce energy. To accomplish this goal, a two-chamber cell was fabricated. The anode chamber integrating photo-oxidation and flocculation was developed by using a TiO2 nanotube array (TNA) and Al foil. A dopamine modified carbon felt (DPA/CF) electrode was located in the cathode chamber to produce H2O2 by the two-electron reduction of O2 with electrons generated on the anodes. Under sunlight irradiation, the TNA photoanode initiated the degradation of perfluorodecylamine (PFDA) as typical refractory pollutant and selectively transformed its organic nitrogen to N2 and NO3− with yields of 87% and 12%, respectively. Compared with PFDA removal efficiency using single flocculation, the efficiency was improved by more than 5 times (ca. 96.6%) in the combined process of photo-oxidation and flocculation·H2O2 production was also achieved using the DPA/CF cathode, obtaining a high concentration of 5.0 mM. Furthermore, this study revealed that the reversible reaction between dehydrogenation and hydrogenation on polydopamine accomplished the catalytic reduction of O2 to H2O2. The present study proposes a new approach involving energy recovery in saline wastewater treatment for an energy-sustainable society.Chemical Engineering Journal., 2019, 369, pp. 845-853.Clin Cancer Res., 2019, 25(1), pp.378-389.

Dopamine (DA, a contraction of 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine) is an organic chemical of the catecholamine and phenethylamine families. It functions both as a hormone and a neurotransmitter, and plays several important roles in the brain and body. It is an amine synthesized by removing a carboxyl group from a molecule of its precursor chemical L-DOPA, which is synthesized in the brain and kidneys. Dopamine is also synthesized in plants and most animals. In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter—a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells.Biomaterials., 2019, 21(6), pp.30354-30377.Chemical Engineering Journal., 2019, 368, pp.577-588.

Synthesizing a stable radical polymer with a conjugated backbone seems like a natural way to introduce conductivity to radical polymers, which are traditionally synthesized with insulating, nonconjugated backbones. For charge storage applications that take advantage of the redox-active nature of stable radical polymers, enhanced conductivity would improve performance.Chemistry of Materials. 2018;30(14), 4799–4807.Advanced Functional Materials. 2018;28(23), 1800560.

The formation of non-covalent directional interactions, such as hydrogen or halogen bonds, is a central concept of materials design, which hinges on using small compact atoms of the 2nd period, notably nitrogen and oxygen, as acceptors. Heavier atoms are much less prominent in that context, and mostly limited to sulfur. Here, we report the experimental observation and theoretical study of halogen bonds to phosphorus, arsenic and antimony in the solid state. Combining 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene with triphenylphosphine, -arsine, and -stibine provides cocrystals based on I···P, I···As and I···Sb halogen bonds. The demonstration that increasingly metallic pnictogens form halogen bonds sufficiently strong to enable cocrystal formation is an advance in supramolecular chemistry which opens up opportunities in materials science, as shown by colossal thermal expansion of the cocrystal involving I···Sb halogen bonds.Nat Commun. 2019 Jan 4;10(1):61.ACS Sustainable Chem.
